February is National Children’s Dental Health Month: Remember: Baby Teeth are a Miracle of Nature!

Did you know that February is Children’s Dental Health Month?

Brought to the public by the American Dental Association (ADA), National Children’s Dental Health Month occurs  every February as a month-long national health observance that brings together thousands of dedicated professionals, health care providers and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers and many others.

At Mitchell Dentistry, we celebrate the miracle of children and their healthy smiles every day, but this occasion gives us the opportunity to share our approach to children’s dentistry.

“National Children’s Dental Health Month has special meaning for us,” says Dr. Yolanda. “Not only are we parents and grandparents, but many of our patients have been with us since they were children, and now we are caring for the next generation. We have seen the positive results of lifelong dental care first hand, and we are always excited to be a part of it.”

One of the subjects we often address is the myth that good care “doesn’t matter” for baby teeth. On the contrary, these tiny pearly whites are a true miracle of nature, acting as guides for incoming adult teeth. In fact,  as the adult tooth develops, it melts away the root of the baby tooth and makes room for the permanent ones.

At Mitchell Dentistry, our dentists and team are focused on making dental visits happy and fun, which leads to adults who are anxiety free about going to the dentist. For children, a simple explanation of why they are here and what they can expect immediately allays any fear they may be experiencing.

What else do we do for fun? We have a special toy box, funny sunglasses, child-sized toothbrushes, and an array of stuffed animals. Plus, there’s our “Cavity Free Club” with $20 Target gift cards as the reward. Some of our hygienists are even known to sing! All in all, we are adept at making the dental visit a positive experience – and we enjoy it!

Before the visit ends, we help parents learn to look for any signs of tooth decay or other oral health issues, and we provide parents with the best methods to help their children brush effectively.

During Children’s Dental Health Month, our office will provide free activity sheets for kids, coloring sheets, mazes and more. Just ask our front desk team!

All the best from the Mitchell Dentistry family to yours,

Dr. Jim
